Folders and lists are merging

For a while now, Soundslice has had two separate concepts: “folders” and “lists.” They started as separate things, but over time they’ve become so similar that it’s just plain confusing. So we’ve decided to merge the two concepts into a single concept: list.

Lists are more powerful than folders, because:

  • You can control the order of slices in a list.
  • A slice can be in multiple lists.
  • A list can contain both slices you’ve created yourself and slices other people created (for example, slices somebody has shared with you).
  • A list has a dedicated “practice view,” with a left sidebar that makes it really fast to navigate between slices.

Beyond those differences, lists can do everything folders can do.

With this in mind, we are planning to automatically convert all folders to lists and remove the idea of folders. But we’re going to do this in phases, specifically for the benefit of our technical customers who have integrated Soundslice into their own products using our data API.

Here’s our plan:

  • One week from today (January 20), we’ll automatically migrate all folders to lists, for all Soundslice accounts except those that have an active API key.
  • In three months (April 16), we’ll automatically migrate all remaining folders to lists (for API users).

If you don’t know what an API is, no worries. You’ll be included in that first group.

Doing the migration early

If you’re impatient and/or especially excited about this change, you can use our new “Convert folder to list” feature today. See Migrating folders to lists for info on how to do that.

Notes for technical customers

For those of you in the second group (API users), please see our new document Migrating folders to lists for technical information on doing the migration. Basically, you’ll need to:

  • Check whether your Soundslice integration uses folders.
  • If so, update your code to use lists instead.

Sorry for introducing some annoying migration work here. Hopefully it’s not too complicated. Drop us an email if you have any questions or if you think three months isn’t long enough to make the changes.

Feedback appreciated

If you have any ideas or feedback on how you use lists, please get in touch — we’re always eager to hear from people.
